Happy Anniversary, Baby

Portland Communique posts some great shots of yesterday's anti-war march here and here.

Let's hear it for the vets:

Did I go? No. I live vicariously through the Internet these days. Yesterday morning, I had considered bringing Owen to his first protest, but Jenn objected on the grounds that the cops might pepperspray him. Not an unreasonable concern, given past behavior. As it turned out, the cops were chastened by a recent Oregon Supreme Court ruling that they can't arrest you simply for "failing to disperse." Funny little thing about freedom to assembly or something. So the cops were on good behavior yesterday, or so I've heard. And, as it turned out, Owen had a bit of tummy trouble, so we just stayed home. I'm sure he'll have plenty of opportunities in his lifetime to voice his dissent—probably starting with, "It's not fair! I hate you! You're the worst dad ever!" But that's a few years down the road.

Looks like Matt Groening there on the right. The coffin must be full of bootleg Bartman t-shirts from the early '90s.

Heh....that guy *does* look like Matt Groening. :)

Yeah, yesterday was what a rally *should* be - the police were on their best behavior, the riot cops were far away from the crowd (I saw them staging on SW 13th before the rally), and the bike cops saw their duty as shepherding the crowd through the streets.

Some of the Black Bloc stayed afterwards on Broadway right in front of the Starbucks, but the bike cops managed to nudge them out of the street by doing a moving-bike-wall manuever - no pepper spray, rubber bullets, or other nasties. (There were at least five green-hatted NLG members, myself included, there if they did.)
