Gay Marriage: Still On

Multnomah County Chair Diane Linn is rolling the dice and letting the licensing of same-sex marriages continue. Since Attorney General Hardy Myers has stated that Oregon law, though definitively excluding same-sex marriage, violates Oregon's constitution, Linn reasons that a potential lawsuit by a same-sex couple seeking equal treatment by the county would win, so why put the county through all the hassle? A bit of a gamble, and a likely rejoinder to Linn's reasoning is not hard to come up with: "Because the county is expected to uphold the law, no matter how ridiculous." Sure, yeah, maybe—but didja see the county budget lately? The state of the economy? Of course, that doesn't stop homophobic groups from filing their own lawsuits. Which will also likely be struck down. So who's wasting time and money, eh?

And on a totally irrelevant note—looky who is on PBS now:

Dennis DeYoung is bringing Styx to public television. "Monday at 8-10pm, TV
The former Styx lead singer/songwriter is in the OPB studio to host this concert performance featuring a 40-piece orchestra and 30 voices from the Chicago Children's Choir."

Well, at least it's not more Peter, Paul and Mary.

Personally, I am proud as hell of my county comissioners. Unless and until they are enjoined by a court from performing marriages, they should continue performing marriages. The AG's opinion is no more binding than their own lawyer's opinion, so I think they should do what they believe is right.

Obviously, if they are enjoined, then they should stop until it is fought through the courts.

I loved the fact that they stopped doing all marriage licenses while they considered what to do next.

Personally, I think if they are enjoined from granting same-sex marriage licenses, they should simply refuse to grant any marriage licenses until it works its way all the way through the courts.

It is very nice to finally not have to be ashamed of being legally married (at least for the moment).
