Fodder for the Far Right

Ann Coulter must be frothing with happiness upon reading the resume of Susan Lindauer, arrested today on charges as acting as an agent for Saddam Hussein's Iraqi Intelligent Services.

Lindauer worked for Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) from March to May 2002, the Associated Press reported. She previously had worked as a press secretary for former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun (D-Ill.) starting in 1996 and, before that, for former Rep. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), before he became a senator, and for Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.).

Prior to starting her career as a congressional aide, Lindauer had worked at Fortune magazine, U.S. News & World Report and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper, AP reported.

And, yay, a Northwest connection (I'm a big fan of DeFazio). Innocent until proven guilty, of course, Lindauer may be another victim of overzealous right wing prosecution or a victim of her own overzealous left wing delusions—or a mixture of both. Just be forewarned that the Right will play these connections up for all their worth. Oh, look—it's started already!

Left Wing delusions is the correct answer. Jane Fonda , where are you now that Susan needs you?

Oh man—don't gimme none of that Hanoi Jane trip.

For a critical perspective on the Right's obsession with Jane Fonda, consult two recent articles in The Nation: One by her ex-hubby and SDS activist-turned-state legislator Tom Hayden and the other by Carol Burke, which, annoyingly, is not online, so go find the 3/22/04 issue. It's worth the effort.

I was looking at an ap wire on this incident. No mention of her having worked in Democratic Senators' offices. I think she worked for Mosley-braun as well (figures). The article did mention that her father was a Republician and ran for Gov. in Alaska and a distant cousin of a someone in the President's office. Nice truth in reporting there. I hope a full investigation is demanded regarding the Senators and whatever security leaks may have transpired while they had this traitor in their employ.

Lindauer's political connections to the Oregon representatives and Carol Mosley-Braun has been widely reported in the press by this point: on NPR, certainly in the Oregonian, and just about every AP affiliate paper I've seen on the web (cf. KGW AP story—subscription required, sorry). So maybe you missed it, maybe the wire story was early, truncated, or incomplete. But it's no secret.

As for an investigation into the Senators and Representatives, are you kidding? While I'm sure Wyden, DeFazio et al. would cooperate with any investigation—cuz its their country, too, dude—I can't see the necessity. From what I've read, her alleged cooperation with Saddam's IIS occured after she stopped working for most of these guys. From the KGW story linked to above:

[Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif.] said in a statement she was "shocked" to learn of Lindauer's arrest.

"To my knowledge, this former employee had no access to sensitive information. Obviously, I had no reason to think that she was involved in this alleged activity. I have had no further contact with her since she left my employ," the statement said.

DeFazio, appearing at a news conference on a separate matter, called it "shocking that an American citizen is involved" in allegations of spying.

"I haven't talked to the woman for more than a decade and we didn't part on the best of terms," he said.

Moseley-Braun doesn't remember her, Wyden downsized her and DeFazio doesn't even like her. Sounds like she wasn't a very important nor priveleged member of their staffs. So what's to investigate?

Once will do just fine, thank you.

And, again, innocent before proven guilty. Remember Wen Ho Lee?

TOTALLY AGREED. She needs to do some serious time...TRAITOR.*

*Uh, we are talking about Amy S., right?

I already do time, Folks. Come file death certs and trust deeds all day long in a dank, airless cubicle surrounded by witless drones brandishing Avon/Mal-Wart literature[sic] and taste the magic for yourself. [bows]
