Oy. This Thing Again

Catching up on my e-mail, I came across this ACLU action alert opposing (prepare to groan heavily) the Flag Desecration Constitutional Amendment and its House version. No surprise it is being sponsored in the Senate by Orrin Hatch, but why, Gawd, why does Diane Feinstein have to jump on board? If Democrats keep pulling stunts like this to "out-Republican" the Republicans, how long before Republicans start trying to seriously "out-Democrat" the Democrats? Granted, that may not be such a bad thing. Imagine a progressive Republican party that promoted the rights of labor, women and minorities; that opposed both big government and big corporations; that promoted a more socially responsible federalism. Why then we might catch up with Teddy Roosevelt.

Tangential thought (one of many, obviously): Wouldn't it be a better world if the Roosevelt model of Republican competed with the Roosevelt (FDR, that is) model of Democrat? Is that a liberal's wetdream, or whaaah?

On the subject of Democrats out-Republicaning the GOP, I used to think you were being a tad bit unfair to Daschle, but last night I saw him interviewed on "The News Hour with Jim Lehrer," and it was almost enough to make me lose the dinner I'd just eaten. Lehrer was giving Daschle almost every opening to say something critical about the war in Iraq, but Daschle parrotted the White House line on Iraq down to the slightest semicolon. Lehrer asked him the equivalent of "what about the weapons of mass destruction that were supposed to be our reason for going in" and Daschle replied that (to paraphrase) "well, we know that they must of had them at one time... they may have destroyed them before the war... but they had them... Iraq was THREATENING THE WORLD! It would have been nice if diplomacy could have worked, but in the end we EXHAUSTED the possibility of a political solution, this had been going on for 12 years, so we HAD NO CHOICE."

Fuck him.

Daschle represents exactly what I think is wrong with the Democratic Party these days. No backbone. Which is why I draw him bent over so backwards that his head comes out between his knees (with more crude implications, of course.)

Yellow-dog Dems who are an even brighter yellow than I am are saying much the same. Buzz has nine (9) slams at Daschle on his site at the moment. IMHO, Daschle should step down and let someone more aggressive take his place.

Unfortunately, it's not only his own that he's kissing...
